ALERT CONTACT YOUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES TODAY! Ask them to spare public education from the devastating mid -year cuts proposed by the Governor. The Governor has proposed reducing School Aid in the current School Year by $836 million. In higher education the Governor has proposed an overall $600 tuition increase to SUNY and CUNY four year institutions and a 10% cut to community college base stat-aid. The mid-year cuts to public education would be painful and disruptive to our school children especially the neediest New Yorkers who rely on public services and who are already feeling much of the pain from the current crisis. There are alternatives to cuts alone. State leaders must pursue constructive solutions to the budget crisis that includes a balanced plan of increasing revenues as well as imposing cuts. Education cuts only worsen the state economy. We recommend a more progressive income tax structure that would bring in billions of dollars in new revenue.
